Working Structure Fire

Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 3:03 PM:

A working structure fire was reported at an address in Newton. Initial reports indicated the structure was a large barn fully involved, prompting a second alarm assignment before arrival.

On arrival a defensive operation began with crews making an exterior attack on the fully involved barn as well as working to protect exposures immediately next to the structure.

Embers from the fully involved structure traveled some distance from the fire building, igniting separate fires in a haystack 1/2 block north of the scene, and a stubble field 1 block north. Brush trucks from Newton and Cache County worked on the haystack fire and field fire, adding truck 120 from the second alarm to the haystack fire.

A Tender Task Force was also requested, to bring water tenders and a structure engine to support the fire in the haystack and field.

Approximately 50 firefighters from across the valley responded to this incident, from Newton, Clarkston, Trenton, Smithfield, Richmond, Lewiston, North Logan and Cache County.

One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and was treated on scene by CCEMS Ambulance 160.

The barn and its contents were a total loss, with several tons of hay lost in the separate haystack fire. A nearby home also received damage to its exterior siding from the radiant heat.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
