Working Structure Fire

Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 5:57 PM:

Receiving reports of an explosion and fire in a residence located in Cache Junction, Utah, the Logan City 911 center dispatched a 1st alarm assignment for a working structure fire in Newton's response area. Initial reports to dispatch indicated there were three ocupants in the home.

With no hydrant water supply available in Cache Junction, a Tender Task Force for water supply support was requested. Shortly afterwards a 2nd alarm to the Working Structure Fire was struck, bringing additional engine companies to the scene.

Arriving units found one occupant outside of the home, and another person inside could be heard yelling for help. As EMS prepared the first patient for transport, crews mounted a combined rescue and suppression effort, locating the second person in the rubble and effecting a rescue. Both patients were listed in critial condition.

Suppression and rescue operations continued until the 3rd occupant was located at approximately midnight. Sadly he had perished in the explosion.

Responding to this incident with Newton Fire were crews from Clarkston, Trenton, Smithfield, Lewiston, Richmond, Mendon, Logan City, Franklin County, Idaho and Cache County Search and Rescue, assisting with rescue operations, medical care, fire suppression and water supply. UHP Troopers and Deputies from the Cache County Sheriffs Office provided traffic control as the highway was closed due to the water shuttle operation.

We are so very grateful for the men and women of our neighboring fire, EMS and law enforcement agencies, always answering the call when help is needed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshalls Office.

Working Structure Fire

Friday, March 3, 2023 at 10:54 AM;

Engine 50 responded to a working structure fire in the County, east of Newton after passersby noticed smoke and flames coming from a large shed some distance from the residence. Reports indicated there may be animals inside the structure and fuel tanks were near by.

The 1st alarm assignment also included Engine 10, Engine 130, Engine 41, Rescue 40, Engine 151, Air 20 and CCFD.

Engine 50's arrival report confirmed the structure was well involved. With no hydrant water supply available, the request for a Tender Task Force was transmitted. Responding on the Tender Task force were Tender 50, Tender 130, Tender 20, Tender 30 and Franklin County T101, securing water supply with a dump tank and shuttle operation.

The property owner confirmed there were dogs in the shed but thankfully they were able to evacuate the dogs safely. Crews were also assigned to protect the fuel tank exposure on the east side of the structure.

Thanks to the assistance of automatic and mutual aid companies from our neighboring stations, the fire was contained to the shed and contents.

A request for heavy equipment was made to the County Road Department, allowing firefighters to safely mop up the remaining hotspots after the roof and walls were demolished.

The structure and contents are a total loss and the cause of the fire is accidental.
