Haystack Fire

Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 8:27 AM:

Engine 50 and Tender 50 - with automatic aid from Engine 10 (Clarkston), Engine 130 (Trenton) and the Cache County Fire District - responded to a haystack fire at an address just outside of Newton.

Due to the nature of the call and the close proximity of two additional hay stacks a Tender Task Force assignment was also dispatched to the scene.

Engine 50 was able to secure a water supply connection to a nearby hydrant and its crew stretched hand lines for attack. On their arrival, firefighters from Engine 10 and Engine 130 worked with Engine 50 to extinguish the smoldering fire. The property owner had begun salvage operations by separating the bales of hay and this work continued in order to isolate the section of the stack that had been on fire.

With the fire under control, the Tender Task Force units not committed to the incident were released. Overhaul continued as the affected bales were removed from the stack. As needed the bales were opened and spread apart in order to be soaked with water.

Early notification and a quick response by the property owner were crucial to the success of this response, limiting the spread of the fire to approximately 20 bales.
