Grass Fire

Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 9:11 PM:

Brush 50 and Tender 50 had been released from today’s fire in Wellsville and were headed back to the station when a grass fire endangering structures was dispatched. Brush 50 and Tender 50 would pass by the address on the way back to Newton so they notified dispatch that they would respond.

On arrival Tender 50 found the fire was a rekindle of Monday’s grass fire between Wellsville and Mendon that extended to the haystacks. Using the water from Tender 50 the fire was extinguished. Brush 50 and Tender 50 returned to quarters.

Tender Task Force

Monday, September 7, 2015 at 1:25 PM:

As fire units were returning to quarters after the vehicle fire response, a grass fire in another part of the county was toned out.

Before the door to Tender 50's bay was closed Newton's tones sounded, requesting Tender 50 to join other water tenders for a Tender Task Force as the grass fire had reached an open haystack as well as another shed full of hay.

Tender 50 responded immediately and on arrival went to work to help supply water to the engines and brush units fighting the fire.

Tender 50 was released and retuned to Newton just before 6 PM.

Vehicle Fire

Monday, September 7, 2015 at 12:03 PM:

Engine 50 and Tender 52 were paged to a county address for vehicle on fire in a field. 3A220 from County Fire also responded.

While enroute it was determined that Engine 50 would not reach the vehicle because of the terrain. Engine 50 returned to the station and it's crew responded with Brush 50, Brush 51 and Tender 50.

Tender 52 was staged in Cache Junction and was closer to the scene, arriving first and with a quick attack was able to extinguish the fire before it extended further into the field.

Brush 50, Brush 51 and Tender 50 arrived in time to assist with overhaul, returning to the station shortly thereafter.

Haystack Fire

Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 8:27 AM:

Engine 50 and Tender 50 - with automatic aid from Engine 10 (Clarkston), Engine 130 (Trenton) and the Cache County Fire District - responded to a haystack fire at an address just outside of Newton.

Due to the nature of the call and the close proximity of two additional hay stacks a Tender Task Force assignment was also dispatched to the scene.

Engine 50 was able to secure a water supply connection to a nearby hydrant and its crew stretched hand lines for attack. On their arrival, firefighters from Engine 10 and Engine 130 worked with Engine 50 to extinguish the smoldering fire. The property owner had begun salvage operations by separating the bales of hay and this work continued in order to isolate the section of the stack that had been on fire.

With the fire under control, the Tender Task Force units not committed to the incident were released. Overhaul continued as the affected bales were removed from the stack. As needed the bales were opened and spread apart in order to be soaked with water.

Early notification and a quick response by the property owner were crucial to the success of this response, limiting the spread of the fire to approximately 20 bales.

Structure Fire

Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 7:10 AM:

Engine 50, Aux 50 and CCFD units responded to a possible structure fire at an address in Newton.

Noticing the smell of smoke and burning plastic, the homeowner contacted dispatch for fire department assistance. No flames were visible at the time of notification but the source of the plastic smell appeared to be a ceiling mounted exhaust fan in a bathroom.

With help from neighbors a fire extinguisher and a garden hose had been deployed before the fire department arrived. On arrival Newton firefighters took over suppression actions with the garden hose, stretching a line from the engine as a backup.

As firefighters opened up the ceiling in the bathroom and adjacent dining area it was evident that a fire had been burning in the attic space for some time, but the fire had not extended throughout the entire attic.

With the fire extinguished, CCFD units on scene began an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The fire appears to have started in the area of the exhaust fan and has been determined accidental.
