Bench Grass Fire

Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:00 PM:

Brush 50, Brush 51, Tender 50 and Batallion 3A responded to a grass fire burning in the hillside above Newton Reservoir. It was reported that the fire was growing rapidly, prompting a special call for two additional brush trucks. A short time later the full second alarm assignment was requested by Batallion 3A.

Gaining access to the east edge of the fire was a problem but initial attack with a progressive hoselay and hand tools made good progress, knocking out the active flames just over an hour from the initial notification. After mop up was complete all mutual aid units were released, leaving Brush 50 and 3A222 to monitor the fire overnight.

The cause was determined to be careless use of fireworks, burning just over 5 acres.
