Engine 50, Aux 50 and CCFD units responded to a possible structure fire at an address in Newton.
Noticing the smell of smoke and burning plastic, the homeowner contacted dispatch for fire department assistance. No flames were visible at the time of notification but the source of the plastic smell appeared to be a ceiling mounted exhaust fan in a bathroom.
With help from neighbors a fire extinguisher and a garden hose had been deployed before the fire department arrived. On arrival Newton firefighters took over suppression actions with the garden hose, stretching a line from the engine as a backup.
As firefighters opened up the ceiling in the bathroom and adjacent dining area it was evident that a fire had been burning in the attic space for some time, but the fire had not extended throughout the entire attic.
With the fire extinguished, CCFD units on scene began an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The fire appears to have started in the area of the exhaust fan and has been determined accidental.
