Working Structure Fire

Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 4:54 PM:

Logan City 911 received a call from a property owner in Newton reporting a fire in a metal building behind a residence. Dispatch transmitted the ticket for a 1st alarm working structure fire, comprised of Engine 50 (Newton), Engine 10 (Clarkston), Engine 130 (Trenton), Engine 40 and Rescue 40 (Smithfield), Engine 120 (Logan City), Air 80 (Hyrum) and Cache County Fire.

After notifying dispatch, the property owner attempted to open the overhead door of the building, but a mechanical failure prevented the door from opening fully and affected by the heat, two of the door sections fell into the structure. After this attempt, the property owner stood by for firefighters to arrive. We appreciate the assistance of the property owner in securing the electricity to the building and sharing the location of potential hazards inside the structure.

Engine 50 connected to a nearby hydrant and on arrival found heavy fire in the building. It's crew stretched 2 lines for fire attack, directing the hose streams through the opening created when the overhead door sections had fallen into the structure.

Firefighters from Engine 40 and Rescue 40 stretched a third line from Engine 50 to support their assignment - cutting a hole in the metal siding to allow their hose stream to reach deeper into the structure, followed by removing the lower sections of the overhead door to improve access to the structure for the first two attack lines. Later, the access point in the exterior wall was used for positive pressure ventilation.

With three lines in operation, Engine 130's crew connected a second line to the hydrant to ensure the water supply to Engine 50 was sufficient, then joining the firefighters from Engine 10 and Engine 120 at staging, these companies rotated into assignments as directed by operations and command.

We are extremely grateful for the dispatchers at Logan City 911 and the firefighters from our neighboring agencies for their assistance with this incident. With their help a quick knockdown was achieved and a nearby camp trailer and the residence were not damaged.

Fire damage to the structure and contents was significant, but thankfully no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
